Everything about O- blood donation

Frequently asked questions

Why is O- blood so precious?

O- blood can be given to every patient, whatever their blood type. In an emergency, when there is no time to check the patient’s type, O- is the blood that is used.

How many people are O-?

About 6% of the population. That is why every O- donor matters so much.

How do I know if I am O-?

Your blood type appears on your donor card or on a test result. Otherwise, register anyway: we will direct you to a centre to check it.

How often can I donate?

In general, men can donate up to 4 times a year and women up to 3 times, with at least 8 weeks between donations. The transfusion centre will confirm this for you.

How should I prepare before donating?

Eat normally, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol the day before and bring an ID document.

Is my information protected?

Yes. Your details are only used to contact you in an emergency and are never shared without your consent.

Many people do not know their blood type. By sharing our message with your family, your church, your mosque or your workplace, you may help find the donor who will save a life.
